Today, January 12th is National Marzipan Day.
Marzipan is a type of paste made from almond meal and either sugar or honey.
Marzipan is often used in cakes. The paste may be used as an ingredient in the cake itself for example, in stollen, or it can be rolled into sheets and affixed to a cake, such as a fruit cake, which is then iced.
As well as this, marzipan is also used to make sweets (or candies). These are often made into imitations of other items, such as fruit, and painted (with edible paint) to look like such. These can be quite common during the Christmas period.
