Today, August 24th, is National Waffle Day.
The first use of the world Waffle (in English) dates back to the early 18th century.
Waffles are a world wide dish, with many variations, that consist of leavened batter or dough, which is cooked between two distinctively patterned plates, often called a waffle iron. Early one were not electric of course.
Waffles are often eaten as a sweet dish, but can also be used in a variety of savoury ones. Especially if they aren't made from a dough mixture, such as with potato waffles. They are sometimes eaten plain, but are otherwise topped with a variety of different items.
