Sports can be as dangerous as they can be beautiful. A sports person dedicates his or her entire life to the sport, overlooking the fact that the sport poses a certain health risk or in severe cases even life risk.

Recently, the world of cricket suffered a big tragedy in the sad demise of Australian batsman Philip Hughes who died of the injuries he received by being hit from a Sean Abbot bouncer.

Let us pay tribute to the late great Philip Hughes by remembering the deaths of some cricketers who died in the past while playing cricket.

Hughes wasn’t the first ever cricketer to die as a result of being struck by a ball. Pakistan’s Abdul Aziz in 1958, England’s Ian Folleyin 1993, India’s Raman Lamba In 1998 all died after being by the cricket ball while playing in a match.

Zulfiqar Bhatti from Pakistan also died in a domestic game that took place in 2013 after being hit by a bouncer. On another occasion, in a South African domestic match, batsman Daryyn Randall died as a result of the ball striking him on the head.

Other sad demises include those of Pakistan cricketer Wasim Raja, England’s Andy Ducat and Richard Beaumount all died of heart attacks on the field of play.

Wasim Raja, was noticed in easiness and discomfort before his final collapse, much to the shock of everyone at the stadium. The Pakistan international suffered a tragic death as he couldn’t survive the heart stroke.

Another England batsman named Wifl Slack passed away on the pitch in 1989 of a suspected black out. The actual cause of his death however remained unknown, with close ones claiming that Wilf suffered blackouts 2 or 3 times in his last few years.
