10 Healthy Game Day Favorites

Posted on at

When I married the daughter of a small-town Texas football coach, I had to learn a thing or two about football. Over the years, I’ve become something of a convert to the sport, and I’ve come to appreciate that the pleasures of game day are all about tradition.

I’ve also learned a thing or two about creating crowd-pleasing spreads for game day. In my experience, it’s important to respect football’s culinary traditions. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t put a healthy twist on your crew’s faves.

With that in mind, here are my top ten picks for healthy game day grub:

Kick Off with a Meal

Bison Chili

Lentil Sloppy JoesBlack Bean Tostadas with Pickled Veggies

Halftime Snacks

Green Pea GuacamoleFresh Salsa

Beet HummusCreamy Cucumber Dip

Nutty Red Pepper and Basil DipCreamy Spinach Dip

Once you’ve whipped up some of these delicious dips, don’t forget healthy dippers! Think raw veggies, whole-wheat pita wedges, whole grain crackers or baked tortilla chips.

Touchdown Treat

At the end of the day, whether you’re celebrating a victory or mourning a loss, guests will be glad when you pass around a plate of easy-to-make Lemon Treats or Pumpkin-Peanut Butter Cocoa Cookies.
