11 QUESTIONS FOR TONY BABOON's leader Adrian Carciova:
Adrian Carciova (TONY BABOON) speaks here in an exclusive Film Annex interview with Fedor Kurzhalov.
FA: When did you first start singing?
Adrian:
Since i was a kid I started listening to music, memorise the lyrics and then sing them.
Then i started composing my own lyrics, most of them being parodies of the songs i had acces to.
I say "i had acces to", because in my little town in Romania , Braila, in the 90's, we had acces mostly to
rap music and that was the style i was more interested in. Later, my tastes in music, refined and i started to
understand and listen to a wide range of musical genres. Officially, i began taking the music career seriously
about 7 years ago, when i sang continuosly and even end up playing in a musical (Hair), wich also gave me the opportunity to have some intense vocal training.
FA: What did your family do to encourage you?
Adrian:
My family said i had a good voice after they heard a recording i made with a melodic voice. I think, my first recorded
melodic voice i did after years of rapping. I guess that was the moment the idea of me singing, rooted in my head.
I was about 16 years old. On the other hand, my family also supported my desire of screaming and awful singing, for
a good period of time.
FA: Who are your musical inspirations?
Adrian:
A couple of big names that pop right now are: Serj Tankian, Bob Marley and his sons, Damon Albarn and of course
many more.
FA: What kind of music do you listen to today?
Adrian:
I listen to music that span from jazz, reggae and african music to trip-hop, rap and 8bit music.
FA: Where would you most like to perform?
Adrian:
For now i'm concentrating on creating songs, i don't really want to play anywhere right now.
I would imagine that a gig at Glastonbury or another big festival as such, or even on a late night show in USA would be an interesting experience, to say the least.
FA: Who would you most like to open for?
Adrian:
I would like to do a show in wich i open for me. Open with my bad reviewed songs, hehe.
With my eclectic sound, i don't think i would be eligeable for an opening act for anyone. My special plan is to have a show in wich i only sing reggae, one in wich i sing all my psychedelic stuff, one for the more upbeat songs and so on. Only then could i open for Damian Marley or Radiohead maybe. Red Hot Chili Peppers would be good too.
FA: If you weren't singing, what would you be doing?
Adrian:
I actually have a job as a graphic designer. I would also like to act, direct movies, make a video-game, do an animated series and so on.
FA: Do you play any instruments?
Adrian:
I started playing guitar about 6 years ago. Didn't get to learn it fully but i compose all the main themes for my songs with it. I would also like to play bass, drums and percussions, i think i could be good at it.
FA: If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
Adrian:
As i said earlier, i like to sing what i am listening too. Hence, if i listen to 10 different musical genres that means i have in mind of doing 10 songs inspired by those styles. In conclusion, you could expect me to approach any kind of style.
FA: What genre of music can't you stand to listen to?
Adrian:
I guess i'm to old for the obsessing minimal music. I can't stand to listen to the new Romanian oriental music (Manele) for more than one hour (some might say it's quite a long time), but only in special situations. And i can't stand, in general, when a traditional musical style is being mocked.
FA: What hidden talents do you have?
Adrian:
As you might see in my second single's music video, Baobab Sawyer, i can joggle with three oranges and also i think
i have some dancing skills.
