It’s that time of the year again when everyone is looking to get themselves some majestic farm animals, take care of them, feed them, wash them … slaughter them and have a tikka party. Yep folks, it’s Bakra Eid (Eid-ul-Azha) season. In a few days, the streets will turn red with blood and the guttural sounds of dying barkas will ring throughout the day. We will enjoy that day, but we also enjoy every moment leading up to it. Here are a few things that happen every Bakra Eid Season like clockwork and we love them!
1. Time to go bakra window shopping
Every year it’s the same. There are 15 days still to go to Eid but you’ve got to go to the market for some bakra window shopping. Are you going to buy a Bakra just yet? Most probably not. But every bakra you look at, you just wanna take home.
2. Mera parosi kay chacha ki bhateji kay janwar.. ufff aalah!
Really?? That’s how each conversation must begin? For most there is no point in having Bakra Eid if you’re not gonna talk about each and every animal that you come across.
3. Konsa janwar liyay?
The age old question! Did you know every shopkeeper, bus driver, pedestrian is keeping count of who has which animal?
4. Feeling left out because you haven’t bought the bakra yet
Everyone has ’em. They are racing ’em. Playing with ’em. Loving ’em.
5. Big boss got a Rs. 7 million Australian cow that we need to see
Big boss with the deep pockets has set up a tent for his Australian cows, guarded by his private military, fed with A-grade hay which is more expensive than a 5-star steak dinner. Chal check kar kay aatay hain!
6. You can never win a negotiation
The mandi will quote your exorbitant prices. You will negotiate. They will reject your final offer. When you leave, someone will come after you to reconsider. Another bout of negotiating, until the seller sells you the animal at a loss. You leave feeling you’ve won. Oh my, you lost big time!
7. Transporting the bakra
Bakras tend to disappear from the backs of pickups. A rickshaw is the best option.
8. The muhalla decides to gather
There is a new animal in town, the town needs to check it out and give a verdict!
9. Falling in love with your bakra
They say love has no boundaries. I say why the heck not?!
10. The calm before the storm (Eve of Bakra Eid)
Bakra Eid is upon you. You spend your last night with your bakras. You joke around, play games, have a few drinks; anything you can do to make their last night special.
11. This is going to be fun
Eid Day! This is going to be fun!
