Another 125 Bangladeshis, rescued by Myanmarese security force from the Bay, were brought back home from Myanmar Tuesday, taking the total number of the returnees to 501.
They were rescued from Myanmar coast while trying to go to Malaysia illegally by sea route.
A 20-member BGB delegation led by BGB-17 commander lieutenant colonel Mohammad Rabiul Islam went to Myanmar across Naikhognchhari’s Ghumdhum border at 10:30am.
After a flag meeting with the Myanmar’s Immigration and National Registration Department at the office of its Border Guard Police (BGP) at Tekbunia under Mongdu district, 159 Bangladeshis were handed over to the BGB team. A 22-member Myanmar team, led by the department’s deputy director, attended the meeting.
A BGB delegation handed over them to police in Naikhognchhari’s Ghumdhum area around 1:30pm. There are 84 residents of Cox’s Bazar among the returnees, while the rest are from 13 districts including Narsingdi, Narayanganj and Habiganj. Of them, 24 are children and juveniles.
Tofayel Ahmed, additional police superintendent of Cox’s Bazar, told Prothom Alo from Ghumdhum frontier, the rescued have been sent to Cox’s Bazar cultural centre. Later, they would be handed over to their families after legal procedure and questioning.
