The Apple Watch is Apple’s first new product category in half a decade. As such, even a 3,500 word review can’t possibly tell you everything you need to know. Even the stuff that you don’t need to know, is, to my mind, probably worth knowing.
The Apple Watch has all the earmarks of a product dreamed up by the late Steve Jobs. It’s beautiful, so smart and more expensive than all competitors. However, Apple confirmed that the Apple Watch was conceived by Jony Ive shortly after the iconic CEO died in 2011. A wearable was, it seems, never on Jobs’ radar, but it was something Ive was obsessed with. That obsession shows.
By now, everyone knows that the Apple Watch’s digital crown is designed to look just like the crown on a high-end mechanical watch. But there are other references to traditional horology. The circular, inscribed details on the back of the Apple Watch are a tip of the cap by Apple to classic watch design. It also looks pretty good, too.
