About 150 million workers are on a strike all over India till 6pm on Wednesday, protesting proposed amendments to various labour legislations.
According to Indian media reports, essential services such as banking and public transport have been affected in some places.
The Hindu reported that some 1.3 million employees from the public, private and foreign banks are joining the nationwide strike called by trade unions to protest what they called the “anti-labour” policies of premier Narendra Modi’s government.
In Delhi, a large number of autos and taxis remain off the roads, according to reports. In Bengaluru, around 15 Volvo buses and BMTC buses were damaged in stone pelting incidents in and around the city following which bus services have been completely withdrawn.
The reports said strike cripples life in Kerala and normal life partially affected in West Bengal.
