There are a million differences between live TV and film making...the biggest for me is the immediacy of everything, you haven't got two days to make nicely shot 15 minute film...you've got 1 hour to make a nicely shot 1 hour film.
Arguably there are many different departments working in great harmony to make this happen, but still its all about getting every aspect perfect and at the right time.
I am fortunate to work in a number of departments when it comes to live TV making, I'm a cameraman by trade but I also work in VT, the chaps in charge of bringing you instant replays when you're watching live sports. In sports such as football and rugby, one other job often handed to a VT operator is to make a 'closer'. This is a short montage, cut to music, and has to perfectly show the mood and tempo of the match that has just happened. Ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, you literally have to lift footage from the match, meaning you have absolutely no control about what you're gonna get, but either way you gotta make it look sexy, and pray theres gonna be goals otherwise you're not gonna have much to fill your minute with.
Oh and this is what you have to make it on...
This little machine allows you to make simple playlists and then add a music track to the back of it, thats about all you can do when it comes to building a closer.
So you've literally got 90 minutes to make a 1 minute long mood setter...and yet you see people spend days agonising over a 2 minute short film...I just think it makes for an interesting comparison.
