Right, it's my final year at university, so I thought I'd reflect on the work I've created so far and what's next for my future in the film/tv industry. Stay tuned for what happened in my first year (this post), my second year (next post) and my final year (probably on another post, but not sure yet).
First year: it's been a while, so be patient with me while I try to remember everything. Ok, first thing I remember when I came to uni was the first lecture we had which was an introduction to the course and the lecturers. Then we had various lectures and technical instruction sessions on new equipment such as the JVC HD110 (which would you believe recorded on tape - none of this digital filmmaking back in 2011, unless you were in your third year). During the first semester of the first year, the lecturers decide to take you completely out of your comfort zone and place you right in the middle of the lake district in a tiny town called Keswick. Now, luckily I had been to Keswick a number of times before coming to uni, so I basically knew where everything was... To an extent. This trip ended up becoming a filmmaking nightmare, what with the appalling weather (it was mainly just grey and miserable) for the four days we were there, having said that there was occasionally a little bit of sunshine. Anyway, I'm rambling on a bit now, so we went to Keswick and we made a film called 'Walking The Cow' to which I have no idea why and to this day still have no idea why it is called that but we went along with it anyway.
Second film was a short exercise to which we had to create 6 parts to a small sequence to create continuous action within the frame. We called it 'The Trouble With Apples' purely because the storyline was about the problems people had with an apple... Simples.
After Christmas we thought, oh it should get easier from now on....how wrong were we? The third film of my first year was a non-fiction film. We were split into groups of about 5-6 people and asked to come up with numerous ideas to pitch for a non fiction film. Our group came up with an idea to base the film on Rob Page's brother who has Erb's Palsy which means he has one arm shorter than the other. The film focused on the struggle both Tom and his parents went through and how he has overcome this disability to be the person he is today.
The final film I created in my first film was a fiction film (or drama is you wish) - we were thrown in at the deep end with this one as they said we have to direct our own films. Panic set in at this point to quickly come up with an idea in the space of two weeks! I ended up creating a very visual experimental take on how computers have a mind of their own so naturally I called it '404 Error'. This was the first opportunity to direct, produce and edit my own film. Now, looking back there are some major flaws in that film, but having said that it was my first film as a director so I'm kind of proud of my achievements in a sense.
Hope you enjoyed my very long reflection of my first year of uni, hopefully my next post (about second year) will be a bit more interesting, especially because the non fiction I made has helped with my future career. Keep you eyes open for that post.
