2nd Generation Computers(1959-1965):
After the first generation computers the second generation computers were developed The period of second generation: 1959-1965.These computers were based on the transistors. In this generation transistors were used that were cheaper, consumed less power, more compact in size, more reliable and faster than the first generation machines made of vacuum tubes. In this generation, magnetic cores were used as primary memory and magnetic tape and magnetic disks as secondary storage devices. The computers used batch processing and multi programming operating system.

Advantages Of 2nd Generation Computers:
The main advantages of 2nd generation computers are as fallows.
Smaller in size compared to the first generation of computer
The second generations computers were more reliable.
Used less energy and were not heated as much as the first one.
Wider commercial use.
Better portability as compared to the first generation.
Better speed and could calculate data in microseconds.
Used faster peripherals.
Used assembly language as well.
Accuracy improved.
Disadvantages Of 2nd Generation Computers:
The main disadvantages of 2nd generation computers are as fallows
Constant maintenance was require.
Costly and not versatile.
Commercial production was difficult.
Only used for specific purposes.
Punch cards were used for input.
