October's "31 Days of Breast Cancer Discovery" is a series of daily informative videos in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month presented in association with Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Susan K. Boolbol, the Chief of Breast Surgery, discusses a various topics about how you can reduce your risk of cancer and how to get the best medical treatment if you are diagnosed with the disease.
On Day 23, Dr. Susan K. Boolbol discusses the difference between a lumpectomy and mastectomy. A lumpectomy is what the majority of women undergo. It is when only the cancerous part in the breast is removed. A mastectomy is not as common and is when the entire breast is removed. However, some women do make the personal choice to undergo the mastectomy surgery.
