60-plus population to triple by 2050

Bangladesh may suffer a bit from aging problem by the year 2050, slightly losing the demographic dividend of having more young population, suggests a UN report.
By the middle of the current century, the country's population of over 60 years of age will rise three times -- 21 per cent of the aggregate population, said the report published by the UN's department of economic and social affairs (DESA) on Wednesday.
Bangladesh's current rate of population of 60 years or above is 7 percent. The rate is projected to reach 21.5 percent in three and a half decades.
Worldwide, the growth rate of aging of people is 3.26 per cent a year, accordingto the report.
In Bangladesh, the 60-plus population will exceed 37 by 2100, the report added.
Bangladesh total population is expected to cross 202 million (20.2 crore) by 2050.
The UN report shows the country's population to be 161 million in 2015. Bangladesh is the 8th largest country in terms of population.
The current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, according to the DESA report titled “World Population Prospects: The 2015 Revision”.
In Bangladesh, the population aged up to 14 years will be reduced to 17 per cent from the current rate of 29 per cent by 2050.
