New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat wants to put a 1 year freeze on new liquor licenses for bars and nightclubs in Inwood, New York. According to Bouncer Chronicles, the neighborhood has always ranked one or two in noise complaints and bar rowdiness. Within the last 3 years, the number of liquor licenses have almost doubled for this small neighborhood.
The New York State Liquor Authority said it can limit liquor permits only for entire counties, not single out individual neighborhoods. Sara Fisher, a volunteer with the Parks Department, said residents refer to the noisy stretch of Dyckman Street West of Broadway as "Alcohol Alley." Rob Bookman, counsel for the New York City Hospitality Association, blasted Senator Espaillat's ideas.
