But he does not take to heart the death of his wife and lives a rich and full life. He goes to the public house daily and drinks wine there.
He has a secret love affair with a widow Mrs. Shorrock , who runs the public house. He believes in the philosophy of eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
It is his excessive love of wine, which makes him unconscious and his daughter Mrs. Slater believes him to be dead.
