IT major Infosys was verbally promised by the previous Left Front government in West Bengal that the company would be given a SEZ (Special Economic Zone) status. So, the company had paid Rs. 75 crore to HIDCO, the concerned authority of the state government for a piece of land at Rajarhat near Calcutta. But the present TMC government in the state is dead against in giving the SEZ status to any company. So, the land was not handed over to Infosys. Meanwhile, a couple of years have passed and the case remains still pending. Under the conditions, Infosys has asked the West Bengal government to either give SEZ status to the company’s proposed software development centre at Rajarhat or to repay the money it has given in advance for the land.
A justified demand by IT major Infosys to state government in West Bengal.
