WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Clean dry paper clips
- One tissue paper.
- A bowl of water.
- Pencil with eraser.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO
Fill half of the bowl with water.
Try to make the paper clip float on water......not much luck, huh?
Tear a piece of tissue paper about half the size of a dollar bill so it can fix in the opening of bowl and should not touch the walls of the bowl.
GENTLY put the tissue flat onto the surface of the water.
GENTLY place a dry paper clip flat onto the tissue and keep in mind, try not to touch the water or the tissue paper.
Poke the tissue paper with the rubber end of the pencil carefully (not the paper clip) until the tissue sinks. With some luck, the tissue will sink and leave the paper clip floating on the surface of water!
HOW IT WILL WORKS?
This is because of SURFACE TENSION. Basically it means that there is a sort of layer of water molecules on the surface of water where the water molecules hold on tight together. If the conditions are right, they can support your paper clip. The paperclip is not actually floating on the water, it is being held up by the surface tension. Many insects, such as water strides, use this method (making skin) to walk across the surface of water.
