“Economic cooperation is basic to laying the foundation for a secure future. A stable security environment is also essential if development is to take root,” is message of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the 5th Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan held in neighboring Tajikistan capital of Dushanbe. Mr. Ban said it is encouraging that the conference has grown to include delegates from some 80 States and international and regional organizations, as well as leaders from civil society, the private sector, the arts and academia. The Regional Conference is part of accelerated process to empower Afghani’s in assuming responsibility for security in all 34 provinces by 2014 to building schools in Afghanistan. “We must work together so that Afghans can see tangible improvements in their daily lives. In his message, Mr. Ban also stated that the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the 28 UN agencies, funds and programs present in the country remain committed to increasing the capacity of the Afghan authorities and institutions to meet the needs of the Afghan people. “We stand ready to do everything possible to help them build a new future,” he said.
