Air War: Open Skies v. Clean Skies
Posted on at
China is refusing to pay new clean air or “carbon tax” imposed by European Union on airlines using its airspace. US and some other national carriers are also disputing such. This threatens to rapidly explode into an air war as EU may play the next card by imposing fines and if that is not honored then refusing landing rights to China airliners and others that may refuse to pay. Beijing Counting on its Economic Might to Make it Invincible to Climate Pressure: The air war could then escalate into a full trade war. China has felt comfortable that the EU would avoid such escalation while at the same battling the Eurozone crisis and asking for Beijing’s assistance in that struggle. However, China has been cool to the EU/Eurozone’s pleas and gone silent in promoting the Euro as counter to the $US as global reserve currency. Further, environmental concerns have become a cornerstone of the EU policy framework – almost as much as free trade. Series of Climate Change "Disappointments": The /disappointment/failure of Durban and before that a series of climate control negotiations becomes more evident with this air war – the globe has no methodology to consistently address the globe’s environmental abusers. The Kyoto Protocol was not embraced by key countries including the US. Copenhagen was another disappointment. Canada dropped out after another disappointment/effective failure in Durban. An Escalating Conflict Moving from Environment to Trade War? The failure to secure a more progressive climate change has its own dire consequences. Another perhaps unexpected casualty could be free skies. It will not be back to the dog fights of WWI, but it could take us to an earlier generation when national carriers were directly nurtured, subsidized and frequently defended as symbols of national pride and economic might. A trade war could be the next battleground, or more accurately, reversion. Climate change management is not just about the environment it appears.
