On December 13th 2000 Democratic candidate and Vice President conceded the US presidential election to Republican candidate and Governor of Texas George W. Bush.
The election had been held on November 7th, and the results were extremely tight. The results boiled down to who had won Florida, with networks saying that first one candidate had won, then the other, as the votes went each way.
Al Gore actually had more popular votes than George Bush, but less electoral votes. A request for recounts in four counties of Florida was rejected, and Bush won the election by a mere 537 votes from Florida, giving him the seats he needed.
Not surprisingly, the Florida result has been quite controversial.
