No matter how fast luxury German automobiles become, they will never match the speed at which a deliveryman can leave an “Unable to Deliver” sticky note.

Recognizing this immutable law of physics, technologists at Audi have created a system that delivers packages to wherever you – or, actually, your Audi – happen to be.

The system is called Audi Connect Easy Delivery, and it’s a partnership of the automaker with DHL Parcel and Amazon. A trial of the program, launching in May, will allow some Audi owners in Munich to request delivery of their Amazon Prime packages directly to the luggage compartments of their cars – a space that’s convenient, secure and discreet.

On the day delivery is scheduled, the car owner will consent to location tracking during a set delivery window, and a DHL truck will find the car wherever it’s parked. The truck driver will have a single-use digital access code that pops the trunk, and the code will expire as soon as the luggage compartment (or the delivery window) closes. According to Audi, the system will protect the Audi driver's personal data and the security of the car itself, though one should perhaps not store any family heirlooms in the trunk on delivery day. As the program expands, Audi owners will also be able to arrange letter and package pickup direct-from-boot.

And so, just as our cars have become rolling entertainment systems and communication devices, they can now serve as portable post offices. We can’t wait to see this paired with Amazon’s foray into drone technology; maybe we won’t even have to stop the car.
