American National Theatre and Academy (ANTA), nonprofit theatrical organization chartered and incorporated by the U.S. Congress in 1935 to present theatrical productions and to stimulate public interest in and further the study of the drama. ANTA, headquartered in New York City, was financed through membership dues, gifts, and receipts from its own productions.
Partially as a consequence of World War II, ANTA did not begin to make its presence felt in theAmerican theater until 1946. After the 1950s ANTA carried on a wide range of activities, including presenting theatrical productions, publishing magazines and newsletters, and promoting the study of drama in universities, colleges, and other schools. In the late 1980s, ANTA was inactive while undergoing major reorganization.
