60 Minutes is one of the most popular and successful TV shows which broadcasts each Sunday night from CBS channel in US. It is number one news program with 13 million viewers per week. It contains news, interviews, reports and online videos.
On this program they had three episodes about The False Confession Capital, The Race to save the Tortoise, Hugh. The first two episodes made me to think about Afghanistan and its Circumstances.
In the first episode about The False Confession Capital, the topic goes around different murder and criminal cases which was supposed to be done by teenagers between age 10-20 in Chicago, while they had to sign a confession paper for what they have not done. Possly a reporter who works on these issues says: "Put a kid in a locked room for 10-20 hours and they want their mama and will say just about anything to get out of there," Possley says. "But instead of going home, they go straight to jail."
What I think out of this issue is that it is not just Chicago or US Police and Justice department's weaknesses but the whole world. Even in my country Afghanistan talking about corruption and to conclude a case with inappropriate judgment is considerable, however in Afghanistan it is more applicable that they follow their cases before presenting in courts by using people who are in power in government or paying bribe to whom, that are going to follow up the case to get what they want. For me this situation is like a virus which can spread and grow fast once it is getting to be used by people, although for every virus there is an Anti virus, thus for a virus called "Corruption" there is an Anti virus called "Education and Social Media", and thats why with Afghan Development Project initiative by building Internet classroom in Afghanistan, providing social media curriculum and an online educational software "Examer" we are going to train Afghan kids from 6th grade to protect themselves by Education injection.
The second episode is an interesting part which was done in an island in Africa coast called: "Madagascar". What do you think what is the slowest creature in the world? Yes, tortoises, during several years of hunting and trading them in the market, some of their races is going to Become Extinct, therefore Eric Goode, an American hotelier, restaurateur, artist, filmmaker, and conservationist based in New York City decided to protect them by establishing Turtle Conservancy in order to track them in the wild.
Living in an ecosystem environment made people to be more careful about what they are doing, though to not ignore other creatures who surround us should be considered. I found an old article in BBC which spoke about a specific rare tiger species which is in Afghanistan, and specially in Asia, that is in extinction danger. I was inspired by watching what Eric Goode has done yet and how we can create such a community in Afghanistan that will be an initiative for this great mission. It is almost four weeks which I have moved to New York City, I am so eager and looking forward to meet him in person and speak about his Turtle Conservancy and finding opportunities to apply the same in Afghanistan.
I am going to write a blog every Monday about the program, so Be Ready Every Monday with Fereshteh on 60 Minutes !!!
