An Afghan Perspective - 60 Minutes on CBS - Justice Sotomayor prefers "Sonia from the Bronx" January 13, 2013

Posted on at

Sonia Sotomayor is the first Hispanic in the Supreme Court, she's the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants who settled in the Bronx. She is 58 years old, calls the streets of her childhood, "My Beloved World," and that's the name of her new memoir. She is  one of the most powerful women in America. I watched her interview on Sunday in 60 Minutes on CBS.

She described herself in a simple phrase : " I am the most obstinate person you will ever meet. I have a streak of stubbornness in me that I think is what has accounted for some of my success in life. There is some personal need to persevere, to fight the fight. And if you just try and be stubborn about trying you can do what you set your mind to."

I think such a woman who spent a difficult time in her life but believes in herself and her abilities to fight against problems and get what she wants is admirable. I think it is not the matter of gender issue, it is more about  your thoughts and beliefs . She can be a remarkable role model for Afghan women.  However Afghan Women had a very hard time during Taliban regime and they were kept away from education and social activities but since 2001, we can see considerable changes in Afghan society especially for women.

Maria Bashir is one of the bravest Afghan women and who is the first  female prosecutor in Afghanistan, she is the only woman to ever hold such a position in the country as of 2009. she won the International Women of Courage Award in 2011

We can feel the desire among Afghan women to be more active and involved in each sector even in politics which is mostly  dominated by men in Afghanistan. Women are an unforgettable part of a society. Keeping them more involved in social activities will result on more progress and development. There is a question here. How can we keep women more active in developing countries like Afghanistan, Central and South Asia?

For women in developing countries like Afghanistan, access to good education can be limited. This problem influences negatively the life standards of the citizens, the government and the development of the economy.

Women empowerment is always a considerable issue in each society.  When we speak about empowering women the word empowering will include: Economic, Educational, Political, Health and Social empowerment. Based on the above elements,  FilmAnnex recently has launched "Women's Annex" platform that is managed by Afghan women. The platform promotes and supports women's empowerment within and outside of Central and South Asia with videos, instructional programs, and Blog stories about education, business, sports, and a variety of other topics.

I will interview Mrs.Sonia Sotomayor and share my ideas as an Afghan girl about women in developing countries  and will use  her experiences and thoughts  as a  role model for women in Afghanistan.
