Are Chinese parents too protective of their children?

Are Chinese parents just far too protective of their children? That’s been the debate on social media in the country after images of 300 parents spending the night inside Shanghai University’s gymnasium went viral over the weekend.

The parents had gathered there a day before the university began registrations for new students. It’s fairly common in China for parents to escort their children to university as they seek registrations during the freshman year.

But many online seem to think that students at that age need to be independent.

“Do they require parents’ company to enter a college? When I went to the college, I was all on my own, carrying a trolley case and a backpack,” remarked Weibo user @calling.

Another Weibo user @lazhishihuierde, however, disagreed, arguing that there are many reasons for parents to accompany their children; “It has nothing to do with being independent or not.”
