The new generation of 21st century claims to have progressed in terms of equality amongst men and women in many spheres of life. Surveying data of the ratio of school admitters, it might shock us all to realize that there is still a long way to go to see the day where girls are given equal rights to education as that of their male counterparts.
While the relatively developed regions of the developing nations may show a moderate gap between male and female heads per class, it shows a different picture in the rural areas. Girls are neglected in most of the regions and are deprived from most of the basic privileges of the society, education, topping the list.
Women are expected to look after household works and children and are rarely or poorly paid for their services who work outside this sphere. Women literacy rates are still extremely depressing in many parts of the developing countries. This further depresses the progress of the nation.
Proper education to women is one of the basic ingredients towards achieving the goals of development of a nation. In spite of numerous awareness programs and campaigns in support of women empowerment and right to education, many countries are still averse towards this change. One of the outrageous instances in history is that of Malala Yousafzai, the girl from Afghanistan, who was shot on her head, as she asked for right to education for women.
Isn’t it shameful for us being in the 21st century? Should we still believe that our society is progressing?
