Art and Life Imitating One Another - Persephone Episode 6: The Flight

Posted on at

Episode 6 for PERSEPHONE is somewhat of a dichotomy - it is both simple and complex.

At some point in most of my stories I slow things down and let my characters have a moment to catch their breath or release emotions.  And this episode, The Flight, is the one for Persephone. On her ascent she encounters the shades in the Underworld and recognizes one as a lost friend.  The episode is simple, all black & white, hardly any dialogue, no radio narration, and only 4 minutes long.  Persephone's emotions take over, and here is where in art, we draw most from life, I think.  We recall from our own lives, experiences to filter through a character and make their reactions raw and real.  This has hit home for the Persephone family this week, when you realize how much the fantasy art you are creating is mirroring real-life. I hope the series, and each episode will resonate with viewers on very personal levels.  Once you post a video, it is really no longer yours, you give it to the audience as a gift to make of it what they will.

And though the episode is quieter, it uses a special effect technique I've never done before.  I've superimposed images over one another, and have split screens, done composite shots, but you will see that my shades move around the same screen as Persephone.  So, I taught myself "tracking" - I think that's the proper term.  SFX artists here on Film Annex, may know better.  I recorded the edit session - in which I talk a bit more about Persephone, you can view that here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/40442713
