All member countries of the association of south-east asian nations(ASEAN) are Indonesia,Malaysia,Philpines,Singapore,Thailand,Bruni-darussalam,Vietnam,Laos and Myanmar.The countries of association of southeast Asian nations(ASEAN) have combined population of 890 million and now constitute one of the fastest growing regions in the world.The ASEAN economy has grown to a combined gross national product(GNP) of about 312 billion $ and a precapita of 4.94 US $.
The association of southeast asian nation(ASEAn)was established on 8 August 1967 in Bankok(Thialand),with the signing of the Bankak declaraion by the five member countries namely Indonesia,Malaysia,Phillipines,Singapore and Thailand,Brunei-Sarusslam joined the association on * Janvary 1981,vietnam become the seventh member of ASEAn on 28 July 1995 loas and myanmmar were admitted intio ASEAN on 23 july 1997.
The ASEAN nations came together with three main objectives in mind,for To promote the economic,social and cultural development of the region through co-orporative programs to safe-gared the political and economic stability of the region against big power rivalry and to serve as forum for the resolution of Intra-regional differences.
The first summit meeting was held in Bali,Indonesia in 1976 during which the five member countries signed the treaty of amity and co-operation in southeast Asa and the declaration of ASEAn con cord bothdocument signified ASEAn's aims towards ensuring regional peace and stablity and to foster economic and social growth and enhancing the need for cooperation with all peace-loving nations.
Second summit in Kuala kumpur(Malaysia)in 1982.
Third summit in Manila(Philippines)in 1987.
Fourth summit in Singapore in 1992.
Fifth summit in Bankok(Thailand)in 1995.
Sixth summit in Vietnam in 1998.
ASEAN head of Government.
The fourth ASEAN summit in Singapore decided that ASEAN head of government would meet formally every three years and informally at least once in between to Lay-down directional for ASEAN activities.
ASEAN ministerial meeting(AMM).
The ASEAN foreign ministers meet annually during the ASEAN ministerial meeting.The ASEAN ministerial meetng established by the 1967 Bankok declaratio,is responsible for the formulation of policy guidelines and co-ordination of ASEAN activities.
ASEAN economic ministers(AEM).
ASEAN economic minister meets annually or informally to direct ASEAN economic cooperation.The ASEAN economic ministers was intitutionalised at 1977 Kuala Lumpur.The ASEAN economic minister and ASEAN ministerial meeting report jointly summit ASEAN head of the government during and ASEAN summit.
Sectoral ministers meeting.
These are meeting of ministers of energy,ministers of agriculture and forestry,ministry of tourism and ministry of transport,Their first meeting was held in phuket in Febervary 1997.
Other non-ministerial meeting(JMM).
The joint ministerial meeting established by the manila Summit meets as and when necessary to facilitate the cross-sectoral co-ordination of and consultaion on ASEAN activities.The joint ministerial meeeting usually meets prior to the summit.
Secretary-General of ASEAN.
The secretary general is appointed on merit by ASEAN heads of government with the recommendation of ASEAN ministerial meeting.Secretary general is responsible to the heads of government meeting and to all meeting of ASEAN ministers when they are in session and to the chairman of the ASEAN.
ASEAN standiing committee(ASC).
ASEAN standing committee is the policy arm and organ of co-organizaion of ASEAN between the ASEAN ministerial meeeting.COnsist the chairman who is the foreign minister of the country hosting the ASEAN miniterial meeting.
Senior officials meeting(SOM).
The senior officials meeting was formally institutionalised as part of the ASEAN machinery at the 1987 Manila summit responsible for ASEAN political co-operation.
Senior economic official meeting(SEOM).
The senior economic officials meeting was also established as part of the ASEAN machinery at the Manila summit and comprises the heads of trade ,Industry,Finance and commerce of the ASEAN member countries.
Joint consultative meeting(JCM).
The JCM setup at the 1987 Manila summit comprises the secretary general of ASEAN ,SOM,SEOM and the directors general and the secretary general reports the results of the meeting directly to the AMM and AEM.
