Background; how it all started

In September 2001 the Norwegian diplomat and former Olympic competitor Stig Traavik initiated the project “Judo for fred” in Afghanistan. During these years a total of seven Norwegian judo trainers paid visit to Afghanistan; Alfredo Chinchilla, Jon Brattlid, Thomas Engebrethsen, Ane Ofstad Presterud, Cecilie Lille, Gøril Johansen and Birgit Ryningen. Judo for fred is Norwegian and means Judo for peace. Our slogan “slåss for frihet” is also Norwegian and means fight for liberty. Stig Traavik initiated trainings for orphan children (boys and girls) and helped creating the Afghan national judo team in addition to contributing to the already existing training sessions for men. To continue Stig’s work in Afghanistan the following people, in the spring of 2002, initiated “Judo for peace” in Norway; Gøril Johansen, Cecilie Lille, Vibeke Thiblin, Alfredo Chinchilla and Birgit Ryningen. In the spring of 2003, after a meeting with the board of the Norwegian judo association (NJF), “Judo for peace” (JFF) became an independent project within the NJF. The board of JFF was working to send Norwegian trainers to Afghanistan for limited periods of time. Our first tickets to Afghanistan, which made it possible for Vibeke Thiblin and Birgit Ryningen to have a ten week stay in Afghanistan in the autumn of 2003, were covered by Hydro Polymers and Right to Play. During 2004 we had a rapid development both economically and regarding the level of activity. The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), www.norad.no, have been our main funding source since the beginning, but in 2005-2007 we also run an exchange program for youths funded by Fredskorpset (FK), www.fredskorpset.no. In 2007 JFF became a committee under the Norwegian Judo Federation.
