It is learnt that the Cetacean Population Study team, deployed along the Sindhudurg cost for the past six months under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project on Mainstreaming Coastal and Marine Biodiversity and implemented by the Maharashtra State Mangrove Cell has succeeded in spotting a pair of mother-calf blue whales 3 kms from the Sindhudurg coast in Maharashtra between March and May. This is the first time in over 100 years that whales have been spotted along Maharashtra coast, the last such spotting being recorded in 1914.
