The BNP has called a 36-hour general strike in Rajshahi division from Sunday to protest against killing of a youth who it said was its activist in an alleged shootout with RAB in Chapainawabganj's Kansat.
The party's central leader and Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul on Friday evening announced the shutdown.
The 20-Party alliance will also enforce a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Barisal Division on Sunday in protest against the 'confinement' of BNP chief Khaleda Zia.
Bulbul said after calling a general strike in Chapainawabganj district, Rajshahi BNP leaders held a meeting in the evening.
The decision to enforce the shutdown from 6am on Sunday to 6pm Monday in the division was taken in that meeting.
One Motiur Rahman, 35, was killed in an alleged gun battle with RAB in the early hours of Friday at Kansat Bazar.
Earlier, the BNP had called a 24-hour strike for Sunday in Chapainawabganj protesting his death.
RAB, however, claimed that Rahman used to function as a ‘key person’ in exploding bombs, torching vehicles and hurling petrol bombs in the area.
Meanwhile, Rangpur district BNP called dawn-to-dusk shutdown for Saturday to protest against Khaleda's ‘confinement’ and release of all leaders including acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
BNP’s Rangpur metropolitan unit chief Mozaffar Hossain announced the general strike at the local office.
He threatened that they would announce nonstop shutdown and tougher agitations if they face police obstruction.
