The move to release 57 Indian fishing boats by the government of Pakistan is a diplomatic step to in the part of the Pakistan officials. Mr. Shareef before joining to witness the swearing- in ceremony of Mr. Modi announced as a friendly gesture to release the seized fisherman and the boats.
By this action of the Pakistani counterpart tactfully pointed out they expect the same stroke from the Indian side. Pakistan views issue of prisoners as humanitarian and look forward to witnessing the Government of India release Pakistani prisoners also after the completion of the prison sentence. This calls the Indian side to adhere to the Consular Agreement signed by both the parties in 2008.
Lobbying of the release of fishing boats, was carried out by a nine- member Indian delegation, visited Karachi to inspect the condition and discuss modalities for the release. There are about 800 Indian boats confiscated by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency. These seized boats are sold in Pakistan at auctions.
Indian fishermen and boats are often apprehended by PMSA authorities when they violate Pakistan territorial waters. Most of the boats after years of detainment are in a devastating condition which needs repair before handing over to Indian authorities according to PMSA. The authorities further clarified the boats are not in a seaworthy condition and that why not returned.
