Brave Afghan woman wins UNHCR award

An Afghan Refugee teacher Aqeela Asifi won the 2015 Nansen Refugee Award, said a UNHCR press release on Tuesday.

According to the press release, the UNHCR awarded Aqeela Asifi for her tireless dedication to educate many of underprivileged girls in Pakistan.

The press release added that the 49-year-old Afghan woman is being recognised for her “brave and tireless” dedication to education for Afghan refugee girls in the Kot Chandana refugee village in Mianwali.

In 1992, Asifi fled from Kabul with her family to a remote refugee settlement of Kot Chandana.

Asifi, a former teacher, was shocked seeing shortage of schooling for girls in the area.

The girls were kept inside their home, but she made a revolution breaking the societal taboos and gave the captive girls a chance to learn.

Through her incessant effort, she ultimately was succeeded to convince the community people.

Thousand children are being educated under her close teaching, thanks to her passionate endeavour.
