Buying a Macbook Cheaply

Posted on at

Because of the recent turn of events I have to rethink my strategies to buy the Macbook I had planned for early 2015. I have £300 saved and I think I did well to manage to save that with it being Christmas and all. Trouble is, in the UK Macbooks are much more expensive than they are in the US. A new recent model will cost me anything between £749 -£1500, dependant on whether it's an Air or Pro and the speed/memory.

I notice on Ebay UK, there are lots of Macs for sale from the US. Would a US Macbook work here? What about the taxes, import duties? Where would I find out about this? I don't mind the keyboard layout being different for the sake of saving at least £200. Would a UK charger work in them?

Apart from that, the cheapest I have found are second hand which I am a bit wary about and they come with no warranty often. Otherwise I am down to Apple's refurbished which come with one year warranty but they are still expensive. A well known store sells them and they come with 2 years warranty. That's tempting but expensive also.

Any advice welcome.
