Parenting An Only Child

Being a parent is one of the most difficult and complex roles we play as adults. Parenting challenge us at many levels - emotionally, physically, socially and financially and most of us are not adequately prepared for this role The current social and economic conditions requires women to work full time in order to have some financial stability in the family. Women today are marrying much later than they did a few decades ago, resulting in them starting a family late and sometimes having to settle for an only child, because they cannot afford to have more or do not have the family support system to help in raising children or because they almost past their age of childbearing.

Only Child  family Units are Here to Stay

Considering the cost and complex nature of raising a child many families opt to be only child units either by choice or compulsion. There many myths steeped in bias about the only child. It is assumed that having only one child could lead to leads to various problems for the child and the parents as well. People generally believe that an only child is selfish, bratty, and spoiled etc., and their parents are over indulgent and poor disciplinarians. However, the truth is there are two sides to the coin. The child stands to gain in certain areas while loses out in others.

My Final Thoughts on Only Children

It does not matter if you have an only child or a large family, what matters is the parenting style and the awareness of what could be done to make things work. If parents are aware of the pitfalls it is possible.to avoid them and bring up their child like any other. It is time we busted the myths since we have more single children today than ever before and pave the way for only children be accepted as any other kid. No parent is perfect and no parenting solution is universal. All of us need to find our style and parent our children in ways that suits us and help them grow normally.
