Caribbean Threatened by Climate Change to Organized Crime, by Ambassador mo

The 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) hosted UNSG Ban Ki-moon in Frigate Bay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Ban said a “challenge for Caribbean countries is the growing threat posed by organized transnational crime and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. We must consider this challenge in a regional context, as well as through the prisms of development, human rights, rule of law and security reform, The United Nations system stands ready to work with you on these issues.” (From UNSG Office & UN New News Centre Sources).

Climate Change Pioneers
“Climate change is yet another urgent and growing threat to development, economic growth, public health and our very security,” he said. “You have been pioneers in calling attention to the vulnerability of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).”

Caribbean Critical to Multilateralism
CARICOM and particularly Trinidad and Tobago were critical in their initiatives and leadership for the establishment of the International Criminal Court. From hosting gatherings at the early stages in the 1990’s to spurring ratification of the Rome Statute, the Caribbean has stood out as a success.

“It is strongly committed to multilateralism and regional integration, and remains at the forefront in tackling global challenges – from climate change to strengthening democracy to rebuilding after natural disasters, Please rest assured that you can count on me to continue the promotion of our common objectives for development, security and human rights for all,” Mr. Ban said

By the way, July 4th is also CARICOM Day! (Bottom PHOTOS Above - CARICOM Rotating Chair Dr. Denzil Douglas and H.E. Lolita Applewhite, CARICOM Secretary General)
