Celebrate or Lament 7,000,000,000 Inhabitant -Birth? By Ambassador mo

Should we celebrate or lament more people on earth - a mixed blessing? The alternative though is not necessarily much better, and it is generally our common cultural tradition to celebrate birth as well as life. This coming Monday – October 31, 2011 – we will officially “welcome” the earth’s 7,000,000,000 citizen. Blessing or Curse or Challenge? Continuing rise in global population is seen as much as challenge than some certain blessing. Most of the rise in population, young people and births, is in the developing and underdeveloped world. Approximately 90% of world’s “young” are in these countries living under a canopy of mixed opportunities and conditions. Hunger haunts almost a billion of globe’s people. Of course, the greatest problem accompanying population growth is resource depletion and environmental degradation - current trends of exploitation are not sustainable. On the other hand, dropping populations are a negative for economies and social fabric. It is a dilemma most evident in China’s efforts to control population growth and some of its perhaps not so intended consequences. It will be trend in most of Europe and even perhaps countries like Brazil. Putting Best Face on It! The UN has decided upon a path that does not so much celebrate, but takes note with exultations to meet certain goals: developmental, health, environmental and social. The UN’s Population Fund Agency (UNFPA) has put forward such worthy goals and lofty phrases as: ---“With planning and the right investments in people now, to empower them to make choices that are not only good for themselves, but also for our global commons, our world of 7 billion can have thriving sustainable cities, productive labour forces that fuel economies, and youth populations that contribute to the well-being of their societies.” or ---“We must tear down economic, legal and social barriers, to put women and men and boys and girls on an equal footing in all spheres of life.” A Catchy Slogan Needed! All worthy objectives and well states, but are they catchy and simple enough to be memorable as “Make Love Not War!” The current exploitation as well as abuse of resources/environment is not sustainable. More people is part of the problem, although wiser options could satisfy the cultural tendency to celebrate life and birth and also enhance environmental/resource sustainability. So, a more stick-in-your-eye slogan is perhaps necessary. “Make war, not babies” certainly might catch your attention, but it does not qualify as either good policy or diplomatically correct. Anyway, it feels like a contrarian rip-off on “make love not war.” Maybe we need to offer some assistance in developing a catchy slogan that will go beyond lofty and valid objectives, but also have the capacity to capture imaginations across cultural barriers and most importantly of people who are in the mood for making love. If Music Creates the Mood? Richard Wagner’s or Joseph Wagner’s classics could be a form of contra-aphrodisiac – for that matter any military march music might get young men at least to think of poking with their guns rather than penises. “Make genocide not babies!” could fit the mood. Though rape has been a part of waging war, genocide of whole nations, civilizations and races had been the globe’s more effective form of population control. Wonder which music was played or slogans employed by Homo sapiens in wiping out the Neanderthals? Anyway, we only have a few days – let us know your suggestion for a catchy slogan in “welcoming” the world’s 7,000,000,000 citizen. “Have Sex, Not Babies!” …. At least a few religious institutions might have a problem with this one – even more so than military marching music! Or, Maybe we need a poster-unchild? How about Lindsay Lohan – what happens when cute girls grow up to be oversexed brats? No? – Well give us your best catchy slogan or idea to mark the occasion.
