We walk into Danny's life or instead he walks into ours as his life hits a peak.
Though sadly when life briefly reaches these highs we never really realise until we are once more on the decent.
And so it is in the first scene, Danny is in love, has a successful career that he enjoys but doesn't worship and he's
in control....and it is all quickly to come crashing down around his ears. As we follow Danny, eventually back to his
birthplace, where he grew up on the canal we begin to understand that in this story that has much beauty and
dreamlike wonder it is this first scene that was Danny's dream. Somehow he always knew he would wake up, find
himself back where he started alongside the people who love him and wonder if his escape to the city ever really
happened at all.
Danny only speaks when it is entirely necessary and rarely sleeps. He is intelligent yet will explode with rage and
his mentor and teacher, Bull tries to act as a moral compass. Both Danny's parents have passed. When his father
was found in the weeds by the side of the canal all the bones in his right hand were smashed. His mother and the
real love and (along with his brother Michael) stability in Danny's life killed herself by jumping from Moore's Point.
The film returns to her suicide as Danny returns to the place of her death attempting find himself and in turn finds
a secret. He also returns to find and make peace with his brother and meet up with old friends along the way.
Danny's nickname, "The Dorn" meaning "Fist" in Gaelic translation gives an indication of the man, though the hot
head, king of the gypsie's scrapper that left the canal is far removed from the deep thinker that returns. Danny has
three gifts, he can fight, he can paint and the third is a little more complicated to explain or to understand. This gift
comes as a revelation to Danny himself. Has the name of someone you haven't seen for ages or perhaps you went
to school with suddenly enters your head for no apparent reason whatsoever and then the next day you see them
in the street? Danny's gift is no more than this other than he pays more attention and is more aware of these...let us
call them 'touches' than most. As the story plays we find that many of his scribbles are glimpses into the future.
This is by no means the whole story, instead, as Danny has no control over these touches his gift whilst incidental
brings Danny's morality into question.
Danny has one soul but it has two outlets through his actions. This is not to say he is schizophrenic. He buried
the past so deep, it was not until he is faced with the most extreme acts of humans, that his buried past comes to
the surface. For much of the opening we do not see the other part of him, but through the purity of the scenery
and the love of his friendships the real Danny comes out.
In some ways he is what all of us are: volatile but ultimately very human souls.
