Chipotle Is Cutting Down Its Tortilla Recipe From 11 Ingredients To Just 4

Chipotle is setting the pace for fast-food chains nationwide — and, it seems, they've taken quite the lead.

In April, it stopped serving GMO food. Then it made its coveted guac recipe public. Now, according to The New York Times, the company wants to simplify its tortilla recipe.

Right now, Chipotle's tortillas contain 11 ingredients: flour, water, whole-wheat flour, canola oil, salt, baking soda, wheat bran, fumaric acid, calcium propionate, sorbic acid, and sodium metabisulfite.

But the company wants to get that list down to four.

Working with the Bread Lab at Washington State University to make tortillas suitable for mass production, Chipotle created wraps that contain only whole-wheat flour, water, oil and salt.

The new tortillas are still being tested in small batches at a Chipotle in Burlington, Washington, but next, they plan to "put it into production to supply a small group of restaurants," Steve Ells, founder of Chipotle, told theTimes. "As we prove that's successful, we’ll expand until we’re supplying the whole region with tortillas, and then move on to the next region."

Hopefully, it'll come to the East Coast soon — we can't wait to try it!
