Sweety High asked Chrissy a few questions about her history with music and what it’s like to be the only girl in the band!
Chrissy Costanza comes from a family of music lovers. Though her parents don’t play any instruments or sing, they have always encouraged their kids to hone their musical skills.
“My brother (he’s only 10) plays drums now,” Chrissy said, “so between me singing (very loudly) 24/7, he also is always blasting music through a speaker and drumming along to it so my house usually always has music going on somewhere.”
Chrissy joined Against the Current early in the summer of 2011. Chrissy met bandmates Will, Jeremy, and Dan through one of her best friends. They needed a singer and Chrissy fit the bill.
“I had never really been in a band before but had dreams of being in one,” Chrissy said.
Months later, the band’s bassist Joe joined, completing the group as we know it today.
“Our first year as a band we really didn’t do much,” she said. “Just wrote music, practiced, hung out and dreamt big dreams.
Their channel didn’t get much attention until they released their first single, “Thinking.” A collaboration with YouTube talent Alex Goot on a cover of “Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen really got the ball rolling. That was in July of 2012.
We asked Chrissy what it’s like being the only girl in Against the Current.
“It’s actually not that difficult at all,” she said, “I’ve always had more guy friends than girl friends anyways. They’re also really good to me, they’re like my brothers so I never feel weird about being the only girl.”
She added that she barely notices the difference sometimes.
“The guys are kind of girls sometimes,” Chrissy said. She said that Will takes hour-long showers and a long time to get ready, and than Dan is super particular about his hair.
“Even when I take a while to get ready, I’m still usually not he last one finished,” she said.
In addition to her music, Chrissy has a very popular vlog and tutorial channel. She had always wanted to do YouTube make-up tutorials, but didn’t think there was an audience for it.
“I never went for it because I didn’t think anyone would care,” she explained. “But then one day girls started asking me about my make-up in certain videos, or about my hair routine.”
It inspired her to finally create a second channel dedicated to those topics. She also uses it to spill her soul in a video blog.
“I think it’s just a really fun way to interact with all of the people who support me on a more personal level,” she said. “I want to be accessible to fans and for people to know who I really am and what I’m really like. I never want to just put a face on.”
Chrissy Costanza recently graduated from high school.
“It was always tough,” she explained, “especially because my band mates live over an hour away so weekday practices were not exactly doable, but we did it! I would go up for the weekend and stay over at one of their houses for practice and we’d work hard all weekend to get everything we needed to get done.”
If Chrissy could collaborate with any artist, she’d pick John Mayer for “a soft, relaxing love song” or Katy Perry.
“I totally cried watching the movie [Part Of Me],” she admitted.
Chrissy explained that the best part of musical success is the friendships she has made. After all, she would have never met two of her favorite people, YouTube stars Alex Goot and Julia Sheer, had she not ventured into the world of YouTube.
“I’m so stoked and grateful that we did become friends,” she said.
Chrissy does have some awesome advice for aspiring girl musicians.
“Do not try to fit a mold,” she said. “Just be you. Do what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you want to wear crazy clothes, do it! If you want rainbow hair, do it! Write lyrics and music that reflect the way you feel not what you think people want to hear. Because that’s when it becomes worth it: when people appreciate and support you just being you. Be proud and confident in who you are. ”
