As expected, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" grabbed the top spot. The animated sequel from Sony Pictures featuring the voices of Bill Hader and Anna Faris debuted at No. 1 with $35 million. Quite a delicious feat with the original film opening at a less slightly yummy feat of $30.3 million in 2009 (movie review below).
Last week's box-office champ, "Prisoners," slid to the No. 2 spot. The Warner Bros. Oscar-bait starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal took $11.3 million in its second weekend for its domestic total of $38.9 million.
Another Oscar-bait, Universal Pictures' "Rush" starring Chris Hemsworth and directed by Ron Howard landed on the third spot with $10.3 million in its second weekend after opening to limited release. The film has since expanded to 2,297 theaters (movie review below).
But two new releases did not have the luck as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2." Fox Searchlight's "Baggage Claim" debuted at No.4 with $9.3 million while Relativity's "Don Jon" was at No. 5 with $9 million.
The weekend's other new releases – Fox Searchlight's "Baggage Claim" and Relativity's "Don Jon" – didn't have debuts quite as sunny as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2."
