Commercializing Terror & Revenge, by Ambassador mo

The “Justice Coin” is pushed on American TV to commemorate the killing of Osama Bin Laden by US Special Forces – all for a $19.95 “special offer,” and what a deal – when the commercial narrator tells us the coin has a $260 value. Of course, when the advertisement emphasizes gold coin it only vaguely adds plated. The viewer then is told of the other value items one receives with the “Justice Coin” including a copy of “Operation Geronimo” official operational plans to kill Bin Laden and a plastic cover, with a special hook just in time for the season that allows the coin to be hung on the Christmas Tree. A couple of years earlier, there was a similar effort to sell the American public a silver coin commemorating the 9/11 attacks. This offer though had the additional value in that each coin was advertised to contain some silver recovered from the 9/11 site. Some people got offended rightfully because along with trace elements of silver for the old World Trade Center site, perhaps there might also be embedded biological matter from the almost 3,000 terror victims. Not really much that the US Government can do to keep people from profiting off other people’s tragedy unless fraud is involved. It may be bad taste, and inappropriate to try to make a buck of a military hit squad, regardless of one’s view on the actual operation or its target, Osama Bin Laden. Reducing these global issues into a commercial enterprise trivializes the discussion and America’s strategic considerations. But, it is a free America after all.
