Congo Voting: Success or Flawed? by Ambassador mo

The United Nations has generally judged elections as peaceful and well attended while the global media has focused on outbreaks of violence and logistic problems. The DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) has millions of potential voters in a country approximately the size of Western Europe and an election ballot covering thousands of candidates an at least 13 pages long. Violence & Logistics: The results will not be know for at least another week as 31 million eligible voters could cast their votes in presidential and parliamentary elections, Roger Meece, Head of the UN peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), toured several polling stations in Kinshasa, the capital, and said he was satisfied with the relatively orderly and peaceful way in which voting has been conducted so far. The UN Chief in the DRC stated that he was encouraged by the professional manner in which officials from the country’s independent electoral authorities (known by their French acronym, CENI) were carrying out their duties. The recovery of the country follows will be reflected also in the successful execution of the country. The real test may come if the current ruling elite honors election results that may thin its hold on power or even relieve it of control and/or the Presidential palace. Joseph Kabila is the entrenched incumbent and son of former dictator from whom he inherited power. Etienne Tshisekedi is considerably older opposition candidate; “old enough to be grandfather to thirty something Kabila” who had declared himself president after voicing that the Congolese no longer had confidence in Kabila. Continuing Human Rights Abuses: Some 8 years after the end of civil war, the country remains frayed. Sexual abuse and other human rights violations are frequent. Former combatants/officials remain accused of grave violations and some are on trial before the International Criminal Court. It is also a country still infested by the most brutal of all “terrorists” – the Lord’s Liberation Army – the US has sent special forces to “assist in training” of local military/security forces in apprehending/killing LRA and its leadership including Joseph Kony: (Read: diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/us-sends-special-forces-on-kill-mission-to-central-africa-by-ambassador-mo/36308 & Also SEE FILM REPORT on LRA: “Lord’s Liberation Army Rampage” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/lords-liberation-army-rampage/24155 ) By Ambassador Muhamed Sacirbey Facebook = Become a Fan at “Diplomatically Incorrect” Twitter – Follow us at DiplomaticallyX War Crimes Justice Channel - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/c/war-crimes-justice
