Conversation with Michael Wyshock, painter, filmmaker, video artist

The collage of Wyshock’s storyboard for Chromosomes Michael Wyshock is a painter, filmmaker, and video artist who combines multiple mediums of art to produce rich, thought provoking, and experimental moving images. He calls his video pieces “Moving Paintings,” because they are heavily influenced by series of traditional paintings and wall assemblages. Wyshock’s main interest for using digital technology is to create customized video projections/installations of new visual situations. Read our brief conversation with the artist below. During your career as a producer, has there been a project that you really wanted to produce but were unable to do so due to certain obstacles and complications? If so, can you talk a little bit about this project and how you were planning to execute it? M.W. A feature length narrative that my friend Joe Sweeney and I have been developing called Chromosomes has some challenges that need to be overcome before it can continue. Chromosomes questions gender identity and the influences of technology and religion through a series of events in two societies. Family traditions are completely non-existent. No one knows what sex is or for. It examines early stages of conditioning against contamination and mechanization. We still need to find a few key people for some essential parts of the story. F.A. What were the reasons that this project could not come to life? And how can similar problems like these be avoided in the future (ex. financing, distribution, etc.)? M.W. Distinct locations have been found over several years of research that are set perfectly for this project. But Chromosomes has a roadblock that I don’t want to compromise. Enough funding to provide exactly the equipment we need to create the feel of the drawings we used during its development. I have fried a few computers by finding the limits of their software and need to upgrade the situation with better equipment before proceeding. F.A. Would you be interested in giving another chance to this project by taking today's technologies into consideration, such as online/digital film promotion and distribution? M.W. For past projects I have been very lucky to collaborate with some really cool people to bring an idea to fruition. These projects were smaller in duration and often created as experimental art installations with little or no budget. But for Chromosomes we definitely need online promotion and distribution to create a direct relationship millions of viewers as well as a new range of investors, advertisers and sponsors.
