The anger and grief that emerge over the killing of Samiul, finally resulted in an upsurge of the humanitarian spirit. Two mothers helped in the nabbing of their killer sons, our expatriate brothers caught one of the killers in Saudi Arabia, the local people managed to catch two more. There has been a mass uprising of humanity in Kumargaon, Sylhet, over the past week. This goes to prove once again, man may be down or defeated, but humanity survives forever.
The role of the police in catching Rajan's killers is questionable. There are strong allegations that they accepted bribes to let the accused flee. But the people did not just sit idle. They prevented the criminals from disposing the body and they caught one of the accused, Muhit. They put up posters, calling for the killers to be caught. There were processions, thousands of people rallied on the highway, demanding justice. There were spontaneous protests all over the country and pressure from the social media forced the government to take action.
Rajan's murderers belittled us a human beings. The movement of the people revived the power of humanity. Two mothers, so moved by the grief of Rajan's mother, had their own killer sons caught. This is true motherhood. We laud them.
At a juncture when the law enforcement agencies are a failure or are opportunists, when the rule of law is steadily disintegrating, it was the common people who came forward. It is our civic duty to stand up against crime, to even catch the criminals and hand them over to the police.
This incident has taught us that it is the common people who are the last resort. There is no alternative but for the people to be alert and vocal against the crime and irregularities, the near anarchy, that has gripped Bangladesh.
