Crewing for others : 'Give it to me'

Posted on at

So as well as working on Rebecca's film SCARLET, I was also set design and construction for Amy Styran's film 'Give it to Me', a film set around 1950's boutique.

The basis for me working was simple, Amy had bought all the props and collected the costumes etc... to fill a 1950's shop with, and me, and two others, one of whom works on the set of 'Utopia' professionally, just had to turn up, and dress the set.

Probably the most challenging thing to do, as we had to rely on Stoke on Trent charity shops to let us borrow some clothing and props on the day of the set dress, as well as try and fit everything through the door, and make a fake wall out of boxes and fabric.

The first thing was to collect clothing rails and props, and set everything up in Spode, Stoke. There were a lot of things to organise and keep track of, as we didn't want to have to return the wrong things to different charity shops. Then I had to clear off old shelves and dressers of dust and cobwebs, as they had been kept in Spode for a long time. Then came the set designer, who I collaboratively dressed the mannequins, and clothing rails with. We had to pick out from all of the clothes, all of the ones that looked like they were from the 1950's, amongst many modern clothes, which was difficult, but came down to researching the 1950's any how.

I also needed to make a wall from fabric, as a back drop for the main prop, a pair of shoes. Again, I had to sift out the vintage looking stuff, but I managed to achieve this with the help of the camera angles, and a clothes rail filling out the empty spaces that would be in shot. Not only that, but the little touches had to count, things such as  labels, price tags were essential into making sure that the set screamed '1950's boutique' from the large dressers, to the price tags and intricate details.

Again, I managed to help create a colourful 1950's boutique with the help of the crew, and Amy's helpful floor plans. I'm really pleased with how the set turned out, and amy is too.
