Some microstrip patch antennas for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications have been designed, fabricated and measured. The propose antennas are designed to operate at L1 band (1575 MHz) with right hand circular polarization (RHCP). The simulation results from the designed models have met almost requirements of the system. Furthermore, the simulation data have been compared with literature and measurement results.
Some antenna models simulated by commercial software HFSS will be represented in this section. The results of these models have been compared, analyzed and evaluated. The elements which affect the results were figured out, so we can obtain the good model given the best results. The low cost available GPS L1 patch antenna was selected and fabricated to validate HFSS simulation as well as investigate design parameters for some typical single feed CP patch antennas. Simulation results were generated by HFSS, including S parameters, far field radiation patterns, VSWR, and AR. The S11 parameters of the antennas were measured by using Network Analyzer at Wireless communication Department, Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications. The measurement results are given and compared with the simulation results.
In the first model, antenna was placed on FR4 – epoxy substrate, which has dielectric constants of 4.4, and the thickness of h = 3.2 mm. By using the equations in chapter 3 we can obtain the patch antenna with size of 45.5 mm × 35.5 mm, with truncating of 7 mm.
