Desmond Tutu Becomes Archbishop of Cape Town

Posted on at

On September 7th 1986 Desmond Tutu became Archbishop of Cape Town in South Africa.

He became an Anglican priest, later bishop and then archbishop in what is now the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (part of the Anglican Communion). He was the first black archbishop, reaching the highest rank in the Anglican Communion (excepting the Queen, who is nominal head), although the Archbishop of Canterbury is considered to be the first among equals.

Tutu was an outspoken opponent of apartheid, and strongly criticised the government of the time. He has since retired and is the emeritus Archbishop of Cape Town.
