D.I.D. - Meanings Behind The Idea

Posted on at

My most recent short drama project consists of many different messages and meanings, which are all very deep, dark and downright saddening. However, these messages are not simply for entertainment for me or any viewers. My aim is to get across some of the problems, causes and awareness issues of the subject.

D.I.D. - referring to the medical condition, Dissociative Identity Disorder, or as it's more commonly known, Multiple Personality Disorder. Having seen first-hand for a number of years the effect that this condition has on people (through close interactions & family members, etc...) I decided I wanted to make a film that replicated some of the effects that are caused through the disorder. This would be done, initially, by making sure that all subject matters were controlled and not in any way offensive to anyone who may view this, as I would not wish to cause offense to anyone with the disorder or anyone in contact with it. However, this is a drama short film and so I would not be able to make the film a light hearted piece, meaning that I needed a happy medium between the two. The film is very metaphorical, and although it will seem very literal, with a narrative, etc... I will make sure that everything will be very vague in order to show meanings and messages rather than a shocking drama about a guy with mental disabilities.

Being that this film had a maximum time limit of 5 minutes, I pondered on the fact that I would not have a lot of time to show 'Literal' Multiple personalities. I therefore decided that in the interest of not offending anyone and having to work in the time limit, I thought of bringing in a more complex issue, which could show meanings and traits of certain disorders, but not be so specific that I would have to make a 10/20/30 minute film to get across the meanings. I did this by also making the character have traits which are more common to other mental disorders such as Schizophrenia and Bi-Polar. In turn, this would ultimately make the D.I.D. less apparent, but more 'shocking' to watch. For example, instead of creating 3 completely different personalities, I created 3 different personality types, which would refer to his current mental state and project his different emotions at the time. Although, I knew that these traits are more common in schizophrenia and Bi-Polar than D.I.D. I realised that this would not be as offensive and complex for a 5 minute short.
